Offshore kayak fishing can be both frustrating and rewarding. That day, it happened to be frustrating to say the least. It had lost 2 big fish early in the morning and for about 3 hours I had no bites at all. It just seemed like nothing I did was working that day and my short window before the winds picked up was getting smaller and smaller. Unfortunately, I ran out of patience and the heat was also getting to me, so I decided to head back to shore but slow trolling my live goggle eye. This time of year you can catch kingfish as shallow as 20 feet of depth or as deep as 300, and that is something that should always be considered if fishing in the South Florida coast. It is always a good idea to keep trolling until you get back to the beach because you can always hook into various species of Mackerel, Snapper and even the mighty silver king. Going back to that day, I was in about 40 feet of depth when my reel starts screaming and I quickly get up to grab it from the rod holder and start fighting this mystery fish. Surprisingly, this fish fought extremely hard for its size and the amount of line it took from my reel got me worried for a second, making me chase it to gain some line back. After a few minutes of fighting I was able to land this gorgeous 15 lbs Kingfish which I gladly took home for dinner. Moral of the story? Don’t give up out there, some days you just get lucky on the way back to shore.
